What most of these options share is the inclusion of sugar – and lots of it. That’s why they’re so tasty. But what if you could remove the sugar, and still get that great taste? What if you could do this without using artificial ingredients, gluten or high carbohydrate ingredients?
About 15 years ago, Mary Jo Kringas asked the same questions – and couldn’t find what she was looking for anywhere on the market. So, she worked on developing a new product that would match these criteria. Something that would fulfill her chocolate craving, but not contain the high-carb, sugar ingredients that she needed to avoid. And so, ChocoPerfection was born.
Whether for weight loss, dietary restrictions or just general health concerns, ChocoPerfection chocolate has been satisfying sweet tooth’s nationwide without sacrificing nutritional value. In fact, these bars contain all the antioxidant benefits of regular chocolate as well as prebiotic fiber, keeping the stomachs of those who enjoy them full and reducing their sugar cravings.
We recently caught up with Mary Jo to learn more about her business and what challenges it presents. She filled us in, and explained some more of the benefits of her ChocoPerfection. Read on for the full Q&A!
Q: How did you get into the business of sugar-free chocolate?
A: In the year 2000, I weighed over 300 pounds and I was diagnosed with having a yeast infection that caused me to crave sugar. I was put on a zero-sugar, low-carb diet that supported me in losing 75 pounds in the first year. Yet, I craved chocolate and there were no good-tasting and all-natural, sugar-free chocolate products available.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about the benefits of sugar-free chocolate? What would you tell people who are unsure about it?
A: Many people avoid sugar-free chocolate because they think it will taste bad. The most common compliment to ChocoPefection is “No one would ever guess this is sugar free.” The benefits of ChocoPerfection include weight loss on a low-carb eating plan, decreasing levels of insulin over time, easier digestive elimination and improved levels of happiness from eating a food we love that is also good for us.
Q: What sets ChocoPerfection apart from its competitors?
A: ChocoPerfection is the only sugar-free chocolate available which is sweetened entirely from zero glycemic index plant fibers. ChocoPerfection is sweetened from chicory root fiber, which is a prebiotic fiber that helps support weight loss on a low-carb eating plan. ChocoPerfection does not use maltitol, dextrin or maltodextrin, which all have a high glycemic index, yet show up in all other sugar-free chocolates.
Q. How does your business handle seasonality?
During the warm weather, we freeze and cold pack the chocolate so that it arrives without melting.
Q: What is the most challenging aspect of running your own business?
A: There is a constant problem now with unauthorized resellers repackaging and re-selling on Amazon or Ebay. This has the potential to damage the brand as the box packaging has been designed to educate customers on the value of the sugar free ingredients used in ChocoPerfection.
