How many emails do I need before my list is worth segmented. My customer list is limited, as well as my contact list. It seems like segmenting would become more valuable or worthwhile as my list becomes larger.

Hi Thom, great question. There isn’t a set threshold of list size needed for segmenting. It really depends on your audience, what you’re selling, business/marketing objectives, etc. One example where you may segment a small list is if you have two completely different product lines with very different audiences and messaging. Hope this helps!

Hi Sue, great question. There are tons of ways to segment your emails, but here are some basic approaches you should consider. First, segment your lists based on customer loyalty. In other words, which of your customers are making frequent purchases and coming back to your site over and over again? Then, take a look and see which customers have only purchased once or twice and place them on a different list. The idea here is that you can create different content and provide different incentives to cater to their shopping patterns.

Another idea is to segment your email lists based on the types of products that your customers have purchased. For example, if you sell makeup and skin care items, you’ll likely see a segment of customers who are frequently purchasing facial cleansers and creams, while others are purchasing lipstick and eyeliner. When you segment this way, you can send targeted emails that highlight special offers or announcements on products that are more specific to their buying habits.

At the end of the day, there are tons of ways you can slice and dice your email lists, but hopefully this gives you a good start.
