As CTO, Brett oversees Volusion’s technology strategy, infrastructure, and development. Brett brings his love of digital platforms, cloud architecture, and a relentless pursuit toward highly effective and motivated teams to Volusion’s executive leadership.
Brett took his first job building platforms when he was 19, working on a digital platform to support the telecommunications company Nextel. His team launched the company’s first public website and built a back-end platform that would become the backbone of the company’s commerce platform. Since then, he has consistently built platforms for a number of companies, always growing them to meet industry standards and demands.
Brett is also an in-demand author, speaker, and trainer, all borne out of his experience in technology and ability to communicate complex topics in understandable and accurate ways. He is the author of Java and XML, which remains the go-to reference work for using the Java programming language to parse, transform, and consume XML, as well as nearly a dozen other books on topics ranging from Object-Oriented Analysis and Design to PHP and MySQL. He is currently training AWS-certified professionals for Wiley and producing video instruction on serverless platforms for the LinkedIn learning platform.
Brett’s best-selling technical titles led to him joining O’Reilly Media as Senior Editor in 2002, resulting in a decade-long partnership with the technical publisher. During his tenure, he was jointly responsible for the company’s enterprise and programming technical publishing, overseeing and growing the bestselling Head First brand, and launching O’Reilly’s live instructional video program.
He most recently worked at Element 84, a software engineering and design firm that builds high performance systems for corporate and government clients. As Principal Engineer, he focused on scalable cloud platforms and staging and distributing petabyte-scale data stores. McLaughlin also led projects on contracts with NASA’s Earth Science group, giving him unique vision and expertise in the practical concerns of cloud-based architectures and large data sets.
When Brett isn’t working on Volusion’s platform, he’s likely laughing with his wife and three kids, playing guitar, or looking for great food and drink around Austin. And on a good day, he’s likely doing all three!
