This week, a team of 10 Volusioneers visited Caritas Soup Kitchen to lend our hands
(and elbow grease) to prepare and serve meals for over 300 individuals in downtown Austin.
With the holidays in full swing, we embraced a chance to Rock the Golden rule and give back to our local community. This month, we chose Caritas of Austin, a non-profit organization that provides valuable resources like housing, food, and educational services to the homeless, working poor and documented refugees within the Austin area.
Founded in 1964, Caritas is one of the largest non-profit organizations in Austin and relies on the help of donations and volunteers to provide daily services for the less fortunate. This year alone, Caritas will offer housing services to prevent over 2,000 adults from becoming homeless, provide over 100,000 meals to those in need and place over 500 individuals in new jobs. These programs are designed to create an environment in which individuals can practice self-sufficiency with the help of Caritas.
Team Volusion arrived bright and early, ready to get to work! We prepared a holiday feast of baked sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, tuna salad sandwiches and even cake for dessert. The Caritas staff was friendly, knowledgeable and organized during the event; no member of our group was left without a job from start to finish. On the day we were there, we served 338 individuals and provided much needed relief from the cold. Those we served were grateful for our participation, and we were proud to give back. Megan Weed, Volusion Sales Engineer, had this to say:
“I love getting the chance to volunteer with co-workers. It makes the experience of giving back so much richer when you share it with the people you work with every day. Serving the homeless at Caritas with the Volusion team made me proud to be a part of such a hard-working group of people that are so dedicated to the Austin community.”
The soup kitchen serves over 300 individuals each day in downtown Austin, and sometimes a hot meal and smile can make all the difference to those in need. Caritas is always accepting volunteers for their kitchen, housing, and educational services. If you are interested, please check out their Facebook page!
Thanks again to the Caritas of Austin staff for making this a memorable and fulfilling experience. We hope to see you soon!
