Getting Started with Volusion: Five Anti-Fraud Features in Your Volusion Software

Opening an online business is an exciting time, and making sure your business is safe is one of the first steps you need to take. At Volusion, we want you to have the best start possible, which is why our software includes several anti-fraud features to help protect your business and your customers. In this post, we’re going to highlight five of these tools and look at how each of them can increase your business security.

Here are five features in Volusion’s software that help keep your online business safe:

 

1. Credit Card Authorization/Capture Mode

Credit Card Authorization/Capture Mode is a feature that allows you to review the details of each order before you collect a payment or ship products. There are different options for this feature, but by default, your Volusion store is configured with the most secure setting. With this setting, credit cards are authorized for the purchase amount as soon as the order is placed, making sure that your customers have the necessary funds. This option also allows you to review an order before you collect credit card payment.

 

2. IP Lookup Tool

IP addresses hold useful information on the location of your customers, which can help ensure that their orders are legitimate. On each order page, the Order Total box contains text that states, “This order was placed ONLINE via IP Address 111.111.111.111″. The IP Address is a clickable link which will take you to the whois IP lookup site and show the geographical origin of the IP Address. Here, you can check that the Billing/Shipping address of the order is around the same area that the IP Address’ is coming from. If the two locations don’t match up, you can reach out to the customer to double check the order details and payment information before proceeding.

 

3. Security Code Match

With Volusion, you have the option of requiring security codes on all purchases, which can greatly reduce the risk of fraudulent transactions. Since security codes aren’t embossed on the card or stored in its magnetic stripe, they can’t be stolen through traditional methods used to steal other crucial card details. This means that having matching security codes a good indicator that an order isn’t fraudulent. In order to require that customers enter their security codes at checkout, be sure to enable the “Require_CVV2_Security_Number“ Config Variable in your store admin under Settings > Config Variables.

 

4. SSL Certificate

An SSL certificate isn’t just a tool to safely communicate sensitive data between websites; it’s an absolute necessity for securely doing business online. For almost all payment gateways, an SSL Certificate is required to accept credit cards directly from your store. To help you out, Volusion offers our own SSL Certificates that meet the industry standard 128-bit encryption, but are significantly less expensive than third-party providers’.

 

5. Fraud Score

Fraud Score is a feature that checks incoming order data against a full database of fraud information to assign each order a score. Based on the score, you can see where orders fall on a scale of risk: Minimal, Moderate and High, thus giving you a quick, well-researched idea of how safe the transaction is.     Love the Fraud Score tool, definitely a time saver. Fraud has been on the rise and one thing we check on larger orders that raise a flag is typing the last name under | Orders : Quick Search. Sometimes you see the customer entered the order many times with the incorrect Security code and on the 3/4th attempt they get it correct. Is there a way we can have a query written that would show Failed Order attempts that eventually are successful? Would require extra work, but would save us on the ones that get by. If this is possible please email me. Thanks for all the help.
