When migrating ecommerce platforms and once the new website has been built, the process of moving your domain name from the old store to the new site is very straightforward. This post will walk you through the steps to finalize the migration but I highly recommend you check out the previous three steps in this migration series to ensure you pick the right time to go live and preserve as much SEO as possible.

Before editing domain settings, you’ll need to install your old site’s Google Analytics tracking code to the new template and create an Annotation in Google Analytics on the date you migrate your domain name to the new site. This will pinpoint the date you made the switch and help gauge the success of the migration. Verify a brand new Google Webmaster’s Profile and submit the new Sitemap right after the site goes live.

The steps needed to bring the new site live depends on whether you will run the site on a sub-domain (store.domain.com) or a root domain (www.domain.com). Contact the domain name host and redirect the name servers for root domain migrations or create a CNAME record for sub-domain sites. It will take anywhere from a few hours to several days for the updated DNS record to propagate. The new site is unable to resolve immediately to the chosen domain name as it takes time for the record change to reach worldwide domain servers. Keep trying to set the new site to the domain name over the first day or two. Once it saves successfully, you are live!
