Volusion Product Update: Automatic Tax Rates

Tired of manually entering tax rates and keeping an eye out for rate changes? As a part of our latest update, you now have a built-in, seamless tool for automatic tax calculations.

With over 11,000 taxing jurisdictions in the United States, keeping up with thousands of rates can be, well, taxing. As a part of our latest update, however, tax calculation is a breeze.

If you’ve signed up with a Volusion store beginning November 7, 2013 and are based in the US, automatic tax rates are already enabled for you by default. If you purchased your store before then, all you have to do is opt-in for these automatic tax rates by navigating to Settings > Tax in your admin and clicking ‘Settings.’ (If you’d like to continue manually populating tax rates, no problem, you’ll still have the option to do so.) You can also disable automatic tax rates, for instances like tax-free holidays, at any time.

Here’s how it works within your admin. For more information, please visit our Knowledge Base article:

By using this new automated sales tax feature, you’re set to save time and headaches, as the tool applies the rates in real time. This means that the guesswork has been removed from the sales tax process, which also means you don’t have to worry about over- or under-charging customers the right amount of sales tax.

This feature is available to all US merchants across all plans, totally free of charge. We hope that as the selling season kicks into high gear that you can focus more on selling and less on those always-fluid tax rates.

Tax rates to a specific address is an important requirement.

This isn’t calculating the tax right for me, tax isn’t always by zip code only! It sometimes changes with the address. (even though it is the same zip) My test did not work.

Hi, Laura. I’m sorry the tax calculated incorrectly. Right now, Volusion only calculates tax rates at the zip code level. You can read more about it in our Knowledge Base article if you’d like. Thank you for your feedback.

If you are only doing it by zip code then it isn’t always correct tax, that’s why I won’t use it. Too bad because it’s an awesome feature if implemented correctly. Thanks.

Thank you for adding this feature! I was dreading having to add tax rates for California! I wish the auto tax rate went up to 3 decimal points though, Missing .005% for Minnesota.

Great feature, however it makes me feel like we are that much closer to having a national internet tax.

Hi Alex, glad you’re excited about the feature. And yes, it does seem like the tide is turning toward implementing an internet sales tax, especially as legislation continues to be debated in Congress. Stay tuned – we’ll be sure to keep you posted!

Now if you could just make it easily import to the state sale tax collecting forms for each county, it’s be perfect.. Hopefully it does breakdown county reporting, as in California, you need to know exactly how much for each county… and I’m assuming, like Texas (home of Ol’ Volusion), CA has a heck of a lot of different tax rates.
Considering moving to (or shipping from) “Sales Tax Free” Oregon… =)
