It’s often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but in this success story, pictures are driving thousands of bucks. By following their passions for photography, Elizabeth and her husband, Olof, started selling breathtaking photographs of Lake Tahoe and Sierra landscapes about 12 years ago. After opening their gallery in downtown Truckee, California, the couple recently moved their artistry online, launching ElizabethCarmel.com. Since then, they’ve increased traffic, sales and notoriety.
Success started with a refined talent – Elizabeth is a professional art photographer who specializes in expressive landscapes and “waterscapes.” Her fine art prints combine dramatic photography, vivid colors and artistic touches to create new, captivating visions of the natural world. Her work has been displayed at the California Museum of Photography and the Nevada Museum of Art. And in 2006, Elizabeth published a book of her photography, titled “Brilliant Waters, Portraits of Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and the High Sierra.”
In explaining her passion, “I believe that experiencing the Earth’s beauty has the power to help nourish and unify us, both on a personal and global level. Through my photography I strive to translate these positive experiences into fine art prints. My goal is to contribute uplifting imagery to the world in a time when we are bombarded with so many negative and sensationalistic images. I hope my photographs help nurture a sense of hope and affection for the natural world. I believe that great fine art photographs are a gateway to a larger perspective about ourselves and the universe we inhabit.”
With this message in mind, Elizabeth knew she needed to share her work online, but knew little about web development. She had troubles finding an ecommerce solution that fit her needs and initially struggled with a clunky Flash website. After realizing she needed a change and reading online reviews, she soon decided that Volusion was her best option.
“Volusion has helped me introduce and sell my artwork to a larger audience outside of my community. Continually improving the website and reaching out to my audience has been a lot easier since I switched to Volusion,” she says.
Since launching TheCarmelGallery.com in Spring 2010 and ElizabethCarmel.com in October, Elizabeth has increased awareness of their storefront in Truckee and dramatically improved online sales through their online shop.
As with any business, there are trials and tribulations. But Elizabeth made it through tough times with the philosophy: “Never lose sight of the fact that we are in the business of making people happy.” And as far as sharing her advice for success, she adds:
“Do a lot of follow up with customers via email news, social marketing and personal emails.” After all, customer happiness is the basis of company success.
