Volusion is what it is because of the people who work within its four walls. So we thought we’d tell you more about some of those people. What makes them tick? Why do they come to work each day? And what do they look forward to doing when they leave the office? In this Employee Spotlight series you’ll get a glimpse at one featured employee each month. This month we talked to Justin Hicks, who is our Manager of Partner Development.
What do you do here at Volusion?
I manage partner development for our Business Development team. Specifically, I work closely with our agency, affiliate and experts programs to grow revenue and extend Volusion's reach.
How did you get into the field?
I sold sponsorship for the Austin Spurs (formerly the Austin Toros) after I graduated from college. I enjoyed the partnership aspect of this job and jumped on the opportunity to work on Volusion partnerships when the position opened up.
What’s the most challenging thing about your job?
Patience is often a challenge. Partnerships grow at different paces, so it's important to find a balance between patience and persistence in ramping up partner relationships.
What are you most proud of in your career? What about outside of your career?
I'm most proud of the team I get to work with every day. They're passionate about helping our merchants succeed. Their passion is contagious.
What do you love most about Volusion?
Transparency — we share openly and often and I love it.
What’s the first thing you do when you get off work?
I stare at my phone for 2-3 minutes. It's a problem and I'm not proud of it.
What do you like to do in your spare time?/ What are your hobbies?
I like to watch and play sports as much as possible. I also still collect baseball and basketball cards — I call it "investing" now so I feel less childish.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
I once went a whole summer in Texas without air conditioning in my car. Don't do that.
Where are you going on your next vacation?
I'm going to Europe this fall; I'll be visiting Italy, Croatia and Montenegro.
If you could open an online store, what would you sell?
I would sell lunch boxes. I love lunch and lunch-related accessories.
Anything else you’d like to add?
It's a privilege to be a Volusioneer and I'm excited for what's ahead.
