Volusion is what it is because of the people who work within its four walls. So we thought we’d tell you more about some of those people. What makes them tick? Why do they come to work each day? And what do they look forward to doing when they leave the office? In this Employee Spotlight series, you’ll get a glimpse at one featured employee each month. This month, we talked to SEO Team Lead Jacob King. Here’s what he had to say:
What do you do here at Volusion?
I work in the Marketing Services department as an SEO Team Lead. Merchants contract us to help market their site on the internet, and I focus on optimizing their websites for search engine visibility and performance. Tl;dr: I make Google things happen for Volusion merchants.
How did you get into the field?
I started out in PPC (pay-per-click) advertising for an affiliate marketing company focusing on coupons. In my spare time, I helped our in-house SEO guy with various projects. It was a nice change of pace and I met a few folks in the field. I began reading a lot about how SEO was evolving and becoming more complex, figured I was a pretty good writer, and started looking for jobs in the field.
What’s the most challenging thing about your job?
On the client side, it’s most definitely managing expectations. For a lot of these merchants, we’re their direct connection to Volusion. They come to us with a range of marketing questions/aspirations, and it can be tricky to help them focus on what’s right in front of them and treat SEO as a long-term strategy that takes patience and refining. Not everyone can compete with Target and Amazon!
On the SEO side, it’s keeping up! Because of the fluidity of search engine algorithms, many of the things we do for merchants are reactionary. It takes practice to start spotting trends and predicting what might come next.
What are you most proud of in your career? What about outside of your career?
I’m proud of winning a Core Values award within my first year at Volusion. As I came into the job pretty green, making Team Lead a little less than a year after starting made me really proud.
Outside of my career, being married to my smart, funny, and supportive wife!
What do you love most about Volusion?
There are plenty of aspects of the company that were proposed and/or tweaked by employees. Our fingerprints are all over this place, and that’s rare.
What’s the first thing you do when you get off work?
Get a warm, ecstatic greeting from my dogs, Pickles and Boomer, when I walk through the door.
What do you like to do in your spare time? What are your hobbies?
I have a bunch of video game systems ranging from the original Nintendo to the PlayStation 4, so I enjoy a little video game escapism.
I’m a big TV and movie nerd and watch a range of things across genres. There’s so much good content out there to consume.
When I get a creative itch, I’ll pull out my guitar. I’ve played it sporadically for about 16 years and really like writing little folk tunes.
I wouldn’t call it a hobby, but I’m really into men’s fashion. Nothing beats browsing the internet and looking at clothes I can’t afford.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Drove halfway across the country with a car packed full of everything I owned and no job prospects.
Where are you going on your next vacation?
I’m heading to Seattle this spring and taking road trip down to Portland while I’m out there. After that? Atlanta to visit some friends and a European train-hopping trip for my wife’s 30th birthday are in my future.
If you could open an online store, what would you sell?
Probably men’s clothing and accessories…but also retro video games…and also baseball hats. I’d rank #1 for each of those.
Anything else you’d like to add?
The shirts I’ve gotten as company swag are some of the softest shirts that have ever existed.
