Little Products, Big Business: Cordy and Ike's

Who They Are + What They Sell

With cloth diapers, colorful toys and an array of other goods for babies (and parents!), Cordy & Ike's is one of the cutest corners of the internet. Monica Weaver founded the Austin-based business in May 2016, after her second child was born. "I had been wanting to open my own business for a long time, and after each of my children was born I had the urge to open a business in the cloth diaper/natural parenting world because of how passionate I was about it," she said. "I finally took the plunge with the encouragement of some good friends of mine."

Getting Inspired

For Weaver, much of her inspiration comes from entrepreneurs just like herself. "A HUGE number of them are moms/dads with young children themselves," she said. "They create and sell the products they want to have available for their own children, which is a big part of why I chose to go into this industry as well."

To Weaver, these fellow parents/entrepreneurs embody a number of her core values. "They're inspiring because they're brave, creative, strong and above all they are focused on their families."

And — of course — Weaver's family is also there to inspire her every step of the way. "My biggest sources of encouragement have been my husband, my sister, and my friends."

The Ins and Outs of Entrepreneurship

It's especially important to have that support and inspiration once the business ball gets rolling, as Weaver has learned! What surprised her most about starting her own business was "How much work went into every detail of it!...I'm doing IT, marketing, purchasing, order fulfillment, everything. I knew it would be a lot of work, but I was still surprised by the scope of it."

It was this amount of work that inspired the advice Weaver gives to entrepreneurs who are just setting up shop. "Plan. Plan plan plan. I did a lot of flying by the seat of my pants in my first year and I wish I had sat down and created plans for marketing and expansion in advance. Oh, and keep good records of everything. Spreadsheets are your friends."

Looking Ahead

So what does the future hold for Cordy & Ike's? A lot! "I want to keep growing!" Weaver said. "I've been adding new products pretty steadily and my customer base is growing steadily as well. I would love to get to the point where I can hire somebody to help out with managing my social media, because that's definitely the hardest part for me. I'd also love to be able to lease some space somewhere, for warehousing if not an actual retail storefront. My entire inventory is in our guest bedroom right now and I literally can hardly turn around in there!"

How they Succeed with Volusion

We asked Weaver a few questions about her experience hosting her store on Volusion. Here’s what she had to say.

V: What do you like about Volusion?

W: One of the big draws for me when I was choosing my platform was that Volusion was an Austin-based company. I believe in supporting local business, so that was a big plus for me, along with the availability of features I wanted to have for my website.

V: What's the Volusion feature you use most?

W: I do a lot of adjusting of my product lines, so I'm on the product creation/editing pages a lot. I really need to start using the Import/Export feature more because I have a feeling it would save me a lot of time.

V: Why did you choose the theme you have for your store?

W: I wanted something simple and clean. My sister is a graphic designer, and I showed her the websites of some of my competitors to give her an idea of what the customer base was used to. She shook her head and said, "You can do better. Don't clutter it up and make it easy for your customers to find what they want."
