FTP account creation and update
Last Updated: 8/1/2007
Question / Problem: How can I create (or add) a FTP account for my site?

Answer / Solution: You can create FTP accounts for accessing your site's files (e.g., adding or removing files from your site).

To do this, you need to access your Control Panel (http://cp.volusion.com) and, once logged in, select the FTP option from the Choose Section drop-down, located on the top of the window.

After pressing the GO button, you will be presented with a screen showing all FTP accounts already created (if any).  To add a new account, click on the Add New button.  This will add a new entry in the above table, with a suggested random ID and password — you can change either of these two fields.

You also have the option of specifying the first directory accessible to this account.  For Volusion version 4, this might be the "wwwroot" directory; for version 5, you might select the "vspfiles" as the base directory for the FTP account.  You can leave it pointing to the root directory (" / ") if you want to give access to the site's log files to the user of this FTP account.

Once satisfied with the new entry, click on the Update button (not the Add New button).

Note: Both the ID and PW need to be comprised of characters from at least 3 out of 4 groups of characters:
  • upper case letter,
  • lower case letters,
  • special symbols, and
  • digits.

Once created, you can use this FTP account within your FTP client.  (Note that you must use PASSIVE mode within the FTP client, this being the default setting for most FTP clients.)
