Using PayPal Basic As A Payment Method
Last Updated: 11/1/2006
Question / Problem: How does PayPal (as a payment method) work?

Answer / Solution: First, to start using PayPal you must go to Settings —> Payment — and enable the payment method for PayPal. In the PaymentMethod_SpecialValue1 field, you will need to enter in the primary email address that is associated with your Paypal account. This will tell PayPal who to send the funds to.

When the customer decides to use PayPal for their order, they must hit the Place Order button before continuing onto PayPal. Yes, this will create an open order in your store. It is up to the customer to continue onto PayPal after placing the order to complete payment. If they do not continue onto PayPal, then the order will remain open and unpaid for. You will need to manually cancel this order.

Now, how do you know the order has been paid for? Our integration with PayPal will actually update the order within Volusion once payment has been received. Please note that this can take a while to update, sometimes a few hours. It all depends on when PayPal collects the payment.

Question: Should I use the Receive button to capture PayPal funds? No, this button is OLY used in unusual circumstances. Do not use the RECEIVE button as you can't capture funds that have not been sent by the customer. PayPal is different from normal credit card gateways in that the customer must sign in to PayPal, make their payment, and then PayPal will then send a signal to Volusion to indicate a payment has been received. This is unlike credit card gateways that actively communicate with the merchant account and withdraw (or at least hold) the requred funds before it releases the customer and before the customer is shown the OrderFinishd page.

A common problem is that payment has been received but the order has not been updated. This is usually because the email address in the PaymentMethod_SpecialValue1 field (within Settings —> Payment —> PayPal) is not the primary PayPal address associated with your account — you can't use any of your secondary PayPal email addresses as the address entered here. You must have the correct address in this field, or it will not work.
